You have seen the posting on the internal board. The platform team wants somebody, the work looks like what you have been hoping to do for a year, and you are about to click apply as though it were any other job.
Pause before you do. Moving inside a company looks like an ordinary application and works very differently.
Your manager will find out. In most places the hiring manager talks to your current one before anything else happens, often before they talk to you. If the first your manager hears of it comes from a colleague, you have turned a normal career step into a small betrayal, and that follows you whether you move or not. Tell them first. Keep it simple and forward looking. I would like to grow in infrastructure work and there is an opening I want to apply for. I wanted you to hear it from me.
The interview began years ago. The hiring manager can ask around, and will. They know who answers questions in the shared channels, whose changes caused the incident in March, who is pleasant in reviews. That can work strongly in your favour. It also means a polished answer in the interview will not outweigh what people already say about you.
Talk before you apply. Ask the hiring manager for half an hour to understand the role. What is the team struggling with? What would a good first six months look like? You learn whether you actually want it, and they get to know you as a candidate rather than as a name in the incident log.
Plan the exit properly. You are staying in the same building, possibly in the same meetings. Agree a handover date with your current manager, finish or hand off what you own, and write down what only you know. Leaving your old team in a mess is a much bigger mistake inside a company than outside it, because the people you left behind are now your neighbours.
Be ready for a no. Internal rejections sting more because you still see the team every day. Ask what would have made the difference, then keep doing good work where you are. A graceful response to a no is one of the things the next hiring manager will hear about.
