Every job teaches you a particular set of things, and it teaches them well. It also has a shape, and some experiences simply do not fit inside that shape, no matter how long you stay or how hard you work.
A team that maintains a large, mature system will make you excellent at reading unfamiliar code, changing things safely and understanding why the odd bits are odd. It will very rarely let you start something from nothing and live with your own early decisions. A small startup teaches you the opposite and almost nothing about scale, process or working with people you will never meet. An internal tools team may never let you near a paying customer. Some roles never put you on call, and some never let you off it.
None of this is a flaw in your employer. It is geometry. The trouble is that it is invisible from inside, because the things your job never asks of you do not feel like gaps. They feel like things other people do.
So once a year, write two lists. What this role has made me genuinely good at. And what it structurally cannot offer, whatever I do. Be concrete. Not leadership, but I have never been the person who decides when something is ready to ship. Not scale, but I have never seen a system under load I could not predict.
Then treat the second list as a planning problem rather than a verdict. Some items can be borrowed without leaving. A rotation into the team that owns the risky service. Covering for a lead during their leave. Volunteering for the migration nobody wants. Some can be picked up outside work, cheaply. And one or two can only come from a different job, and it is worth knowing which ones those are years before you actually move, so that when you do change roles you are choosing it for the missing piece rather than for the logo or the salary alone.
The people who look unusually well rounded at forty did not have better luck with employers. They noticed early what each job could not teach them and went looking for it deliberately.
Monday: write the second list. Three items is enough to start.
