I've shipped web software for years, so I assumed my product's homepage had the SEO basics covered. Then I did what I ask every founder to do: opened the page source and read it like a search engine would, with no memory of my intentions.
Title tag: the company name, which nobody searches for, followed by a tagline that described the category but not the problem. Meta description: missing entirely, so Google was assembling snippets from random body text. H1: an image. Image alt text: whatever the design tool exported. Internal links: two, both in the footer.
None of this was hard to fix. All of it was invisible to me, because I knew what the page was supposed to say, so my brain filled in the gaps the markup left.
30-second takeaway
- 7 SEO mistakes I found on my own homepage as a stranger (my own site)
- Meta description missing on 2 of my top 5 traffic sources
- Canonical confusion — two of my own URLs were competing with each other and I could not have told you which one Google picked (my own site; I can't put a ranking percentage on it)
- 30-minute audit beats 3 months of publishing with broken fundamentals
(Confession: I'd been writing SEO content for 8 months before auditing my own homepage like a stranger would.)
(Caveat: SEO fixes won't rescue a bad product. But a good product with broken SEO is invisible.)
The founder's SEO blind spot
This is the pattern I keep seeing, including in my own work: founders doing their own SEO don't fail at the advanced stuff. They fail at title length, meta descriptions, one clear H1, image alt text, and internal links — the boring layer that every crawler reads first. Advanced tactics built on a broken boring layer are decoration.
A blunt checklist beats advice
What I wanted in that moment wasn't an SEO course. It was something to look at my page and say, without diplomacy: these five signals are missing, here's the priority order to fix them. That's what SEOAudit does — paste your homepage HTML or on-page copy and get a checklist of missing or weak signals (title length, meta, H1, image alt, internal links) plus a priority fix list. No dashboard, no crawl of your whole site, no "book a demo." Sixty seconds and a ranked list.
The priority ordering is the underrated part. Every issue on such a list feels urgent when you see it; fixing title-and-meta before alt text is usually the right call for a homepage, and having the tool commit to an order beats agonizing.
What it is not
It audits one page from the markup you give it — it's not a site-wide crawler, it doesn't check backlinks, page speed, or keyword rankings, and it can't see what's rendered client-side unless that markup is in what you paste. If your homepage is a JS shell, paste the rendered HTML or you'll audit the wrong thing. And an audit fixes nothing by itself; the checklist is the beginning of the work, not the end.
Do this in the next ten minutes
View-source on your own homepage right now and check three things: does the title tag lead with something a stranger would actually search, does a meta description exist at all, and is there exactly one H1 that states the problem you solve. If any answer is no, you've found your weekend task. If you'd rather have the full ranked list than a manual squint, SEOAudit is free to paste into.
