Japan is the world's most mature V2H (vehicle-to-home) market, and not by accident. Earthquakes and typhoons have made "an EV that can power the house" feel like emergency infrastructure rather than a gimmick. If you own a detached home with a driveway and a Japanese-market EV, 2026 is still a good year to wire one in — but the subsidy calendar just shifted, so timing matters. This guide covers what V2H does, the 2026 subsidy reality, and the checks to run before you sign.

What V2H actually does
A dedicated bidirectional unit sits between your car and your home's breaker panel, letting power flow both ways. Charge at night on cheap electricity, then either drive or discharge the pack into the house during the expensive daytime peak. Output reaches up to ~6 kW through the panel — enough for an induction cooktop and an A/C — and in a blackout a full EV battery can keep a typical household running for three to four days. Add rooftop solar and you get a self-consumption loop: charge from surplus PV by day, discharge in the evening, buying almost nothing from the grid.
Check vehicle compatibility first
Not every EV feeds the panel. In Japan, CHAdeMO cars are the safe bet — Nissan Leaf / Ariya, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV — because CHAdeMO-spec V2H is the de facto national standard. As of June 2026, about 32 passenger EV/PHEV models (domestic and import) are V2H-compatible, including Honda N-ONE e:, Toyota bZ4X, and Chinese brands sold in Japan like BYD Dolphin, Atto 3 and Sealion 7. If you drive an imported AC-only EV, confirm it is certified for V2H discharge before buying the unit — many cannot feed the panel.
The 2026 subsidy reality (read this before ordering)
- National V2H subsidy — CLOSED early. The FY2025 national program covered up to half the equipment cost (cap ¥750,000) plus installation (cap ¥550,000), i.e. up to ¥1.3 million. But applications closed on August 27, 2026 — about a month before the original Sept 30 deadline, because the budget ran out. If you missed it, you cannot use the national V2H category this round.
- Tokyo top-up — still open. Tokyo's V2H promotion adds up to ¥1 million (full cost if you have both solar and an EV; ¥500,000 if only one), accepting applications through March 31, 2027.
- Municipal top-ups vary — e.g. Saitama City ¥100,000, Chiba City up to ¥250,000, Nagoya ¥50,000. Always check your city hall.
- National detached-house outlet subsidy — still open (flat ¥50,000, through Sept 30, 2026), a new category that finally covers individual homes.
- Tokyo EV purchase subsidy also stacks (base up to ¥1.3 million; +¥100,000 for V2L capability, +¥100,000 for home charging gear).
Practical effect: on a typical ¥1.5–1.8 million installed system, stacked Tokyo + municipal support can still cut out-of-pocket cost to roughly half — but you can no longer count on the national ¥1.3M layer this cycle.
The night-rate math
A 40 kWh EV charged overnight at ~¥26/kWh costs about ¥1,040 for a full pack. Discharged into the home during the 15:00–21:00 peak (¥45–60/kWh at many utilities), every kWh you don't buy saves ¥20–35 versus the night price — roughly ¥800–1,400 per full cycle per month for a 2-person household. Japan's feed-in-tariff era is over; self-consumption is now the profitable mode.
China Angle
China's bidirectional story is moving fast on the V2L (vehicle-to-load) and V2G side: BYD ships 6.6 kW V2L as standard across its lineup, and Chinese makers plus Huawei are pushing vehicle-to-grid pilots. The structural difference is standards — Japan's CHAdeMO-based V2H is mature but proprietary, whereas China's GB/T bidirectional spec plus its vastly larger EV base could scale V2G faster once interoperability lands. For a Japan-based buyer, the fact that BYD's Japanese models already appear on the local V2H-compatible list is a quiet reminder of how Chinese EVs are becoming part of Japan's home-energy ecosystem.
