Thailand is one of the easiest places in Southeast Asia to drive an EV long-distance — but only if you plan like a local. The network is dense around Bangkok and the Eastern Seaboard and thinner in the deep south and Isan, and the heat changes your charging habits. Here is a practical 2026 playbook for a cross-country EV trip, with the Bangkok–Chiang Mai corridor as the worked example.

Step 1 — Install the apps before you leave home
Thailand has no universal roaming network yet (unlike Europe's Hubject). You need 2–3 operator apps, and each requires registration, often a Thai phone number and a linked card. Set them up and top up your wallet while still on home Wi-Fi — not at a charger with a low battery.
- EV Station PluZ (PTT/OR) — the highway leader, inside PTT petrol stations; ~1,300 stations estimated for 2026.
- EleXA (EGAT) — government-backed, lots of 120 kW+ DC units, transparent pricing.
- EA Anywhere — strong Bangkok/mall coverage, 550+ stations.
- PEA VOLTA (Provincial Electricity Authority) — cheapest public DC, ~400 stations, good for interprovincial travel.
- PlugShare — crowd-sourced working/broken status reviews; keep as a tie-breaker.

Step 2 — Know the network and the gaps
Thailand had 3,720 stations / 11,622 chargers nationwide as of March 2025 (already past the original 2025 target), split roughly half AC, half DC. About 70 % sits in Bangkok and the metro area. Coverage is excellent on Bangkok–Pattaya, Bangkok–Hua Hin, the Eastern Seaboard, and the Friendship Highway north; it thins toward the south (Phuket, Krabi, Samui) and the northeast — the government's "charger within 200 km on all major highways" goal is targeted for late 2026.

Step 3 — Worked example: Bangkok → Chiang Mai (~690–700 km)
Budget 9–10 hours including 2–3 charging stops of 20–40 minutes each (they line up with meals and bathroom breaks). For a car with ~300+ km real-world range, the popular stops are:
- Nakhon Sawan (~230–240 km) — PTT EV Station PluZ inside the forecourt, Café Amazon + restrooms. Charge 20–30 min. (~7.5 THB/unit)
- Tak or Thoen (~490 km) — PTT EV Station PluZ (Tak) or EleX by EGAT (Thoen). Charge to full before the climb. (~7–8 THB/unit)
- Lampang (~600 km) — EleX by EGAT or PEA VOLTA in town; top up before the final leg into Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai itself has plenty of DC units (e.g., EleX x BMW at One Nimman, 125 kW). Charge to at least 80 % before entering any sparse section, and always keep one backup station in the app.

Step 4 — The 20–80 % habit and hot-weather rules
- Keep battery between 20 % and 80 %. Charging slows sharply above 80 %, so 20→80 % is faster than 20→100 %. Don't let it drop below 15–20 % without a plan.
- Heat matters. If you park in the sun for hours, keep a slightly higher charge — the BMS may run the cooling system and quietly burn power. Thailand's tropical heat also accelerates degradation over years, so LFP packs (common on Chinese EVs like BYD Atto 3) are a practical advantage.
- Carry 2–3 RFID cards (PEA, PTT, EA) in case mobile signal fails at a charger.
- Etiquette: move your car the moment charging ends — others are often waiting.
Step 5 — What it costs
Home charging runs about 0.5 THB/km (≈ a third of petrol's 1.7–2.3 THB/km). Public DC ranges 5.30 THB/kWh (PEA VOLTA off-peak) to ~9 THB/kWh; a full 60 kWh charge (240–540 THB) yields 300–450 km. A Bangkok–Chiang Mai round of DC charging is clearly cheaper than the equivalent petrol, the trade-off being 1–2 extra hours.
PHEV / EREV as the no-anxiety bridge
If you don't have home charging, a plug-in hybrid or range-extender removes the planning overhead entirely on long trips — you fuel like a normal car and still commute on electrons. Several Chinese PHEVs/EREVs are sold in Thailand, which is worth knowing if condo charging isn't an option.
China Angle — a Chinese owner's view
Coming from China, where public chargers number in the millions and LFP is the default chemistry, Thailand's network feels young but growing fast — 93 % of Thai EV drivers said charging got more convenient in the prior six months. The operator-app fragmentation is the biggest culture shock; in China a single app or the car's own nav covers most of the country. The upside is that Chinese brands (BYD, MG, Changan, GAC Aion, OMODA&JAECOO) now build many of these cars locally in Rayong, so parts and service are scaling with the network.
