Meijin is less widely discussed but represents solid value for practitioners who need competition-suitable quality without the premium outlay of Hirota or Seishin. Polycotton blends, consistent finishing, accessible pricing. The limitation is longevity at high washing frequencies — maintained carefully it holds well, but aggressive laundering accelerates fabric softening.
Seishin targets the high-specification end of the market, with fabrics developed alongside textile manufacturers and proprietary weave structures. The brand has visible usage at WKF-level competition events, which provides genuine performance evidence. Premium pricing reflects this. The case for the expenditure strengthens significantly at county level and above; below that it is harder to justify.
GHOSTLINE operates differently from the others. Rather than competing directly across the same category, it has focused on a lightweight minimalist kata gi (the OTSU) alongside performance base layers and compression garments designed for training. The base layers — the AIR | EDGE range — address sweat management and muscle support beneath a gi, which is a more complete system-level approach than most traditional gi brands have engaged with. Second, construction quality and fabric behaviour can vary within a brand's range. A brand's flagship competition gi may be excellent while a budget training version underperforms significantly. Evaluating a brand as a whole obscures this.
Third, fit is subjective and body-type dependent in ways that no framework fully captures. Sizing advice from practitioners with similar proportions is often more useful than standard size charts.
Finally, WKF approval status changes. Always verify against the current approved list for the specific event and governing body, not against a purchase made a year ago.

The lightweight karate gi category has become genuinely sophisticated over the past decade, and the marketing language has not kept pace with that sophistication. A checklist-based approach — discipline, fabric weight, WKF compliance per model, washing behaviour, sizing conventions and budget proportionality — cuts through most of the noise.
The brands I have covered each address a real part of the market. None is a universal answer. The useful starting point is always the practitioner's specific context, not brand reputation alone.
