Shared hosting is a bargain right up to the moment it stops being one. The symptoms are always the same: the site crawls at lunchtime, PHP workers get throttled, the extension your developer needs cannot be installed, and you want to run an internal tool on the same box as the website. That is when a VPS starts to pay for itself.
The awkward part is not choosing a provider, it is choosing a size. Buy too small and you pay for a migration in three months. Buy too big and you pay for it every month, forever. Here is the pricing and the sizing logic I use when I put a small business on its own server, with figures taken from the providers' own pricing pages in late September 2026.
Two rules that save more money than any coupon
Buy RAM before CPU. Databases, PHP workers, WordPress plugins and Java apps all run out of memory long before they run out of cores. A 2 vCPU / 8 GB plan almost always beats a 4 vCPU / 4 GB plan at the same price.
NVMe matters more than disk size. A 50 GB NVMe disk feels faster than a 200 GB SATA one for anything database-driven, and archives can live in cheap object storage later.
Size the server from the workload, not the price list
| What you run on it | Realistic specs | Sensible budget |
|---|---|---|
| One business website or blog, a few thousand visits a day | 1-2 vCPU, 2-4 GB RAM, 40-80 GB NVMe | $5-12/month |
| WooCommerce or a booking site with a growing database | 2 vCPU, 4-8 GB RAM, 80-160 GB NVMe | $12-25/month |
| Internal app for 5-20 staff (CRM, ERP, inventory, ticketing) | 2-4 vCPU, 4-8 GB RAM, 100 GB NVMe | $12-30/month |
| Business email server plus shared file storage | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 100 GB SSD | $6-20/month |
| Agency or IT shop running 10-20 client sites | 4-8 vCPU, 8-16 GB RAM, 200 GB NVMe | $25-60/month |
Notice that the internal-app row is the one people get wrong. A CRM or an inventory system for a ten-person office does not need a large CPU, it needs RAM, and it does not care whether the data centre is next to the office.
The renewal column is the real price
First-term pricing is where VPS marketing lives. Two examples from the same September 2026 price check:
- Hostinger KVM 1 is advertised at $6.49/month on a 24-month term but renews at $11.99. The KVM 2 (2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB NVMe) goes from $8.79 to $14.99. Both run on AMD EPYC with NVMe and include weekly backups, which is why the KVM 2 is the usual sweet spot for a first business server.
- IONOS VPS M+ is $4/month for the first three months on a one-year term, then $11. The honest comparison is a $11/month server with a $21 discount, not a $4 server.
The same pattern shows up elsewhere: Contabo is the cheapest way to buy RAM (Cloud VPS 4 at $6.60/month for 4 vCPU and 8 GB, Cloud VPS 8 at $16.80 for 8 vCPU and 24 GB, unlimited traffic), but you accept 200-600 Mbit/s ports, SSD rather than guaranteed NVMe, and a 99.9% uptime target instead of 99.99%. Contabo is the right call for mail servers, file sync, backup targets and internal apps, not for a latency-sensitive storefront.
If you prefer to pay for exactly what you use, DigitalOcean and Vultr are the interesting ones. DigitalOcean's smallest Basic Droplet is $4/month for 512 MiB and 1 vCPU, and since 1 January 2026 it bills per second with a 60-second minimum, so staging environments and batch jobs cost cents instead of a month. Its backups add 20% to the plan price. Vultr starts at $5/month and bills by hours used, with the practical selling point being regions on six continents.
Two more worth knowing before you sign anything:
- AWS Lightsail turns AWS into a fixed monthly bundle: $5/month for 0.5 GB RAM and 2 vCPU. IPv6-only bundles drop that to $3.50, and Windows bundles cost roughly double the Linux plan ($9.50 for the smallest tier). Choose it if the server will later talk to S3, CloudFront or Route 53.
- The "unlimited traffic" trap. Contabo's unlimited traffic comes with a 200-600 Mbit/s port, and IONOS and Lightsail include large transfer allowances rather than literally unlimited throughput. Check the port speed before you plan to serve video or large downloads.
Three costs that never appear in the banner price
- Year two at the regular rate. Budget it in the spreadsheet on day one, not on the invoice.
- Windows licensing. If your line-of-business software only runs on Windows, expect roughly double the Linux price for the same RAM.
- Your own admin time. A VPS gives you root access and the responsibility that comes with it: updates, backups, firewall, monitoring. If nobody on the team will do that, a managed plan is cheaper than a weekend of downtime.
When a VPS is the wrong purchase
- You run a single brochure site with a contact form. Shared hosting with a CDN will do, and it will be less work.
- Your traffic is seasonal and spiky. Pay-as-you-go instances that you can resize for the busy month beat a fixed tier you overpay for eleven months of the year.
- You need the server administered for you. Buy the managed version of the same specs and skip the learning curve.
How to start without regretting it
Open the smallest plan that matches the workload table above, watch memory usage for two weeks, and upgrade when you actually need to. Upgrading takes minutes; over-buying costs you every single month. And if the server is administered from outside the office, keep SSH off the public internet and reach it through a VPN instead.
I keep the full price table - six providers, first-term and renewal prices, plus the workload-to-plan mapping - in the original guide on tanit365.com, and I re-check those prices every few months because VPS pricing moves faster than any comparison page survives.
