The Beginning of Something New
Some experiences mark an important milestone in your journey, and hosting my first-ever meetup in Mumbai was definitely one of them.
On September 26, 2026, I had the opportunity to host OpenSearch Mumbai: Search, AI & Observability, bringing together developers, technology enthusiasts, and professionals passionate about search technology, artificial intelligence, and observability.
What started as an idea to build a community around open-source search technology turned into a real-world gathering filled with technical discussions, knowledge sharing, and meaningful connections.
For me, this was more than just organizing an event. It was about taking the first step toward building a community where people can learn, collaborate, and grow together.
Introducing OpenSearch User Group Mumbai
The OpenSearch User Group Mumbai was created with a simple vision: to bring together people passionate about search technology, AI, analytics, and observability.
I believe developer communities play an important role in helping people explore new technologies, exchange ideas, and learn from real-world experiences.
With this meetup, we took our first step toward creating a space where developers, students, and technology professionals could connect and explore the evolving world of search and AI.
Seeing this idea come to life was one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.
OpenSearch Mumbai: Search, AI & Observability
Our first meetup took place on September 26, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM IST at the MSSU I-Spark Foundation Incubator, Vidyavihar, Mumbai.
The event brought together two insightful technical sessions covering different aspects of the OpenSearch ecosystem, from AI-powered search to running OpenSearch on Kubernetes.
Featured Sessions
- Vectors vs. Hallucinations – How Search Engines Keep AI Grounded
Speaker: Jatin Mehrotra, Developer Advocate at AWS
One of the highlights of the meetup was a session by Jatin Mehrotra exploring the relationship between search technology and artificial intelligence.
The session focused on how search engines and retrieval systems can help ground AI-generated responses in relevant information.
As AI-powered applications continue to evolve, retrieval techniques and vector search are becoming increasingly relevant to building systems that can access and use contextual information effectively.
The discussion offered an opportunity to explore how search technology can support more context-aware AI applications and help address challenges associated with AI-generated responses.
Having Jatin share his insights and experience made this session a valuable part of the meetup.
2 . Running OpenSearch on Kubernetes – The Operator Way
Speaker: Nikita Shinde, DevOps Engineer, Community Builder, and Woman in Tech
Another key highlight was the session by Nikita Shinde, who explored running OpenSearch on Kubernetes through the operator-based approach.
Kubernetes has become an important platform for deploying and managing modern applications, and operating distributed systems on it comes with its own set of challenges.
Nikita's session focused on the operator approach to running OpenSearch on Kubernetes, offering attendees an opportunity to understand how Kubernetes operators can help manage OpenSearch deployments.
The session brought a practical infrastructure and DevOps perspective to the meetup, complementing the discussions around search and AI.
It was great to have a session that connected the OpenSearch ecosystem with cloud-native technologies and modern infrastructure practices.
Beyond the Technical Sessions
One of the most rewarding aspects of hosting this meetup was seeing people come together around a shared interest in technology.
Meetups are not just about presentations and technical discussions. They're also about the conversations that happen between sessions, the connections people make, and the ideas that emerge when different perspectives come together.
From discussing real-world challenges to exchanging experiences and exploring potential collaborations, these interactions are what make developer communities valuable.
As someone who enjoys building and contributing to tech communities, experiencing this firsthand made the meetup even more meaningful.
What I Learned From Hosting My First Meetup
Organizing my first meetup taught me a lot about community building, event coordination, and the effort required to bring people together.
Here are a few takeaways from the experience.
- Every Community Starts With an Idea
You don't need a massive team or a large budget to start building a community.
Sometimes, all it takes is a clear vision, a willingness to take initiative, and a few people who believe in the idea.
The first step is often the most important one.
2 . Community Building Is a Team Effort
Behind every successful gathering is a network of people contributing their time, ideas, and support.
From coordinating with speakers and venue partners to welcoming attendees, organizing an event requires collaboration and communication.
This experience reminded me that building a community is never a one-person effort.
3 . Execution Matters as Much as the Idea
Having an interesting concept is only the beginning.
Planning, coordination, communication, and attention to detail all play an important role in turning an idea into an actual experience.
Hosting this meetup gave me a better understanding of the work that happens behind the scenes.
4 . In-Person Connections Still Matter
Online communities make it easier than ever to share knowledge, but in-person interactions bring a different dimension to collaboration.
The conversations, shared experiences, and spontaneous discussions made this meetup a memorable experience.
5 . Taking the First Step Creates Momentum
Starting something new can feel challenging, especially when you're building a community from the ground up.
But taking that first step creates opportunities to learn, improve, and build something bigger over time.
This meetup was a reminder that meaningful initiatives often begin with a simple idea and the willingness to execute it.
Acknowledgments
An event like this would not have been possible without the support and contributions of the people involved.
A sincere thank you to Jatin Mehrotra for sharing his knowledge and delivering an insightful session on search engines and AI.
A special thank you to Nikita Shinde for sharing her expertise on running OpenSearch on Kubernetes through the operator approach.
Special thanks to MSSU I-Spark Foundation Incubator for providing the venue and supporting the meetup.
I'm also grateful to everyone who attended, participated, and contributed to making this first gathering possible.

What's Next for OpenSearch User Group Mumbai?
This meetup is just the beginning.
The goal is to continue building a community where developers, students, engineers, and technology enthusiasts can come together to explore OpenSearch and the broader world of search, AI, and observability.
There is so much to explore, from search architectures and vector databases to AI-powered applications, Kubernetes deployments, and modern observability practices.
I'm looking forward to organizing more meetups, bringing in new speakers, encouraging technical discussions, and creating opportunities for collaboration.
If you're interested in OpenSearch, search technology, AI, or observability, I'd love to connect with you and have you be part of this journey.
