OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on September 22, 2026, adding work-oriented models to ChatGPT Work, Codex and its API. The release gives paid ChatGPT customers access to the models in professional workflows and introduces a stated 50% price reduction for customers migrating from GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna. The official name is GPT-6 Sol, not GPT-6.1 Sol, and the announcement also covers the companion GPT-6 Luna model.
According to OpenAI's official GPT-6 Sol and Luna announcement, Sol and Luna are positioned as more affordable options in the broader GPT-6 family. OpenAI continues to position GPT-6 Astra as the line's most capable model, while Sol and Luna focus on professional and work-related access points. For teams assessing model costs alongside performance, that positioning is as important as the new availability.
What OpenAI announced
GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Developers can also access them through the API as gpt-6-sol and gpt-6-luna.
Luna has a broader consumer access point: OpenAI says it is also available to Free and Go users through the desktop app. The supplied release information does not state that Sol has the same Free or Go desktop availability.
OpenAI describes the release as including improvements in caching, inference speed and alignment across the GPT-6 family. These are meaningful operational factors, but businesses should separate OpenAI's product positioning from results in their own workflows. The announcement does not provide task-specific benchmarks or a universal performance ranking for coding, writing or other business tasks.
| Model or option | Position in the GPT-6 family | Confirmed access in this rollout | Pricing and performance context |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Sol | More affordable, work-oriented option | ChatGPT Work, Codex and API as gpt-6-sol for named paid tiers |
OpenAI states a 50% price reduction when migrating from GPT-5.6 Sol or Luna. The family release also cites better caching, faster inference and improved alignment. |
| GPT-6 Luna | More affordable, work-oriented option | ChatGPT Work, Codex and API as gpt-6-luna. Also available in the desktop app for Free and Go users. |
OpenAI states a 50% price reduction when migrating from GPT-5.6 Sol or Luna. The family release also cites better caching, faster inference and improved alignment. |
| GPT-6 Astra | OpenAI's most capable GPT-6 model | Not specified in the supplied rollout details | The announcement positions Astra above Sol and Luna in overall capability. |
What the 50% reduction means
The price change is specifically framed against GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna. That matters for organizations already using those variants because a lower model price can reduce the cost of an existing workload without requiring a shift to an entirely different provider or platform.
The supplied research does not provide separate input-token, output-token or cached-token rates. As a result, readers should not infer a specific per-token price from the 50% figure. Actual spend will still depend on how many tokens a workflow uses, how caching applies to it and which model is selected.
For a business, the immediate decision is less about assuming lower costs across every AI activity and more about identifying where an existing GPT-5.6 Sol or Luna implementation can be migrated and measured. Cost per completed task, latency and output quality are more useful evaluation criteria than model naming alone.
Practical implications for coding and work workflows
Codex and ChatGPT Work availability places Sol and Luna in two common work settings: software development and everyday knowledge work. The release can give teams a new cost and capability option, but it does not remove the need to test the model against the tasks that matter to them.
A practical evaluation can focus on three areas:
- Codex tasks: Compare results, turnaround time and review effort on representative coding work before changing a development workflow.
- ChatGPT Work tasks: Test the model on the recurring drafting, analysis or internal assistance tasks already performed in ChatGPT Work.
- API implementations: Review usage patterns and migration requirements for applications using GPT-5.6 Sol or Luna, then measure costs and output quality after a controlled change.
OpenAI's caching and inference improvements could be particularly relevant where response time and repeated context affect workflow economics. Still, the announcement alone does not establish how much faster or less expensive an individual implementation will be. Teams should use their own prompts, data boundaries and success measures to determine whether Sol, Luna or Astra is the appropriate model for a given job.
The rollout also makes model selection more nuanced. Astra remains the option OpenAI identifies as most capable, while Sol and Luna create lower-cost choices for work-oriented deployments. That distinction supports a workload-based approach: reserve the most capable option for tasks that require it, and validate whether a lower-cost model meets the quality threshold elsewhere.
