Solid Bleached Sulfate (SBS) paperboard is a premium, high-density packaging substrate manufactured from 100% virgin bleached chemical wood pulp with a top-tier brightness rating of 90+ GE. It serves as a widely used substrate for retail folding cartons, beauty packaging, over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, and direct-contact food packaging where print reproduction, structural performance, and hygienic properties are important.
When you hold a luxury perfume box, a high-end medical kit, or a box of gourmet chocolates, you may be holding packaging made from SBS. Because it is manufactured from virgin chemical pulp rather than recycled post-consumer fiber, it provides a clean white appearance, a low-odor profile, and a smooth surface that performs well during printing, folding, and finishing.
Navigating paperboard selection requires understanding the mechanics behind the substrate. This technical guide breaks down the chemical pulping process, caliper and stiffness specifications, competitive substrate trade-offs such as SBS vs. FBB vs. CCNB vs. SUS, real-world packaging applications, and a step-by-step framework for selecting an appropriate grade for a production run.
The Chemistry & Manufacturing Process of SBS Paperboard
To understand why SBS paperboard performs reliably under a printing press and on automated packaging lines, it is useful to understand what happens during the pulping, bleaching, papermaking, and coating stages.

Sulfate (Kraft) Chemical Pulping
The foundation of SBS lies in the sulfate chemical pulping process. Wood chips are cooked in "white liquor"—a hot aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium sulfide (Na2S). This digestion breaks down and removes much of the lignin, the natural material that binds wood fibers together.
Unlike mechanical pulping, which retains more lignin and relies heavily on mechanical fiber separation, chemical pulping separates cellulose fibers while preserving much of their useful strength characteristics. Papermakers can combine different fiber types to balance surface formation, smoothness, tensile strength, and tear resistance.
- Hardwood Fibers: Shorter, finer fibers that can contribute to smoothness, formation, and printability.
- Softwood Fibers: Longer fibers that can contribute to tensile, tear, and burst strength.
The precise fiber blend varies by manufacturer and grade, so the technical specification supplied by the mill should always be used when a particular performance target is required.
Bleaching Technologies: ECF vs. TCF
After pulping, the fiber slurry remains relatively dark. To produce a bright white paperboard, the pulp undergoes bleaching stages that reduce residual lignin-related color compounds.
- Elemental Chlorine-Free (ECF): Uses chlorine dioxide rather than elemental chlorine gas. ECF is widely used in modern chemical pulp production.
- Totally Chlorine-Free (TCF): Uses bleaching agents such as oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and ozone without chlorine-based compounds.
Both technologies can produce bright paperboard suitable for demanding packaging applications. The actual brightness, aging behavior, and environmental profile depend on the specific manufacturing process and grade.
Hygienic & Sensoleptic Purity
Virgin-fiber SBS can be selected for packaging applications where odor and taste transfer need to be tightly controlled. This is particularly important for food, confectionery, beverage-related, pharmaceutical, and healthcare packaging.
Food-contact suitability should not be assumed simply because a board is SBS. The specific grade, coating, inks, adhesives, and converting materials must all meet the applicable food-contact requirements for the intended market and application.
Clay Coating Variations: C1S vs. C2S
Once the paperboard sheet is formed, its surface may receive a mineral-based coating containing materials such as kaolin clay and calcium carbonate with suitable binders. Coating improves smoothness and helps control ink absorption.
- Coated One Side (C1S): One surface receives the primary coating for high-quality printing while the opposite side has a different surface treatment. C1S is widely used in folding-carton applications.
- Coated Two Sides (C2S): Both surfaces are coated. This can be useful when both the exterior and interior require high-quality graphics or a premium appearance.
The correct coating configuration depends on the packaging structure, printing requirements, and desired interior and exterior appearance.
Structural Specifications: Calipers, Basis Weights, and Stiffness Mechanics
Specifying paperboard requires understanding the relationship between sheet thickness, mass, stiffness, folding behavior, and structural resistance.
Caliper Measurement Breakdown
In North America, paperboard thickness is commonly measured in points, where one point equals one-thousandth of an inch.
In metric markets, thickness is often stated in microns (μm), alongside basis weight in grams per square meter (gsm).
The conversion is:
Caliper (pt) × 25.4 = Thickness in Microns (μm)
| Caliper (Points / pt) | Metric Thickness (μm) | Approximate Basis Weight (gsm) | Primary Packaging Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10pt – 12pt | 254 – 305 μm | 180 – 210 gsm | Cosmetic cartons, lipsticks, tea boxes, pharma inserts |
| 14pt – 16pt | 356 – 406 μm | 240 – 280 gsm | Retail folding boxes, supplements, skincare, food |
| 18pt – 20pt | 457 – 508 μm | 310 – 350 gsm | Medium-weight retail, perfume boxes, apparel packaging |
| 22pt – 24pt+ | 559 – 610 μm+ | 380 – 450 gsm | Heavy CPG items, spirits packaging, luxury candle boxes |
These values are useful as general specification ranges rather than universal conversions. Actual basis weight varies by manufacturer, formulation, coating, and grade.
Grain Direction & Structural Integrity
During papermaking, wood fibers tend to align with the direction in which the paper machine forms and transports the sheet. This creates a Machine Direction (MD) and a Cross Direction (CD).
GRAIN DIRECTION MECHANICS
MACHINE DIRECTION (MD)
Fibers generally align vertically
+-----------------------+
| | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | |

CROSS DIRECTION (CD)

| ===================== |
| ===================== |
| ===================== |
+-----------------------+
Grain direction can influence stiffness, folding, creasing, and the structural behavior of a finished carton.
For structural engineering:
- Main display panels may benefit from an orientation that uses the board's stronger bending direction.
- Grain direction should be considered when positioning folds and score lines.
- The correct orientation can help reduce cracking, distortion, and unwanted panel movement.
The actual score direction and grain orientation should be confirmed with the packaging converter because die design, board grade, caliper, and score geometry all influence the final result.
Barrier Coatings & Compliances
Although SBS provides an excellent printing surface, paperboard itself can absorb moisture, oils, and other substances. Functional coatings may therefore be added when the packaging requires additional barrier performance.
Common approaches include:
- Polyethylene (PE) Extrusion: A polymer layer can provide additional resistance to moisture and liquids for suitable packaging applications.
- Dispersion Coatings: Water-based barrier coatings can provide resistance to grease or moisture depending on the formulation.
- Bio-Based Barrier Systems: Some packaging applications use plant-derived or other bio-based materials as part of the barrier system.
Food-contact compliance must be evaluated for the complete packaging system. The specific board, coatings, inks, adhesives, and intended food type must meet the applicable regulations and requirements in the target market.
Substrate Comparison: SBS vs. FBB vs. CCNB vs. SUS
Choosing the right paperboard involves trade-offs between visual appearance, structural stiffness, weight, cost, printability, and application requirements.

SBS vs. FBB (Folding Boxboard)
FBB uses a layered construction that combines chemical pulp outer layers with a mechanical pulp core. The mechanical core can provide useful bulk and stiffness at relatively low density.
SBS, by comparison, is known for its smooth, consistent surface and clean white appearance. It can be particularly useful where detailed graphics, premium finishing, interior appearance, and high-quality folding-carton presentation are important.
The better choice depends on the specific requirements of the package rather than on a single performance characteristic.
SBS vs. CCNB (Clay Coated News Back)
CCNB is commonly manufactured using recycled fiber content and can provide a lower-cost packaging option for suitable products.
Its appearance, moisture behavior, folding performance, and surface characteristics can differ from virgin SBS. For applications requiring premium graphics, clean white interiors, demanding finishing, or tightly controlled packaging performance, SBS may be considered.
The appropriate choice depends on product requirements, regulatory needs, environmental objectives, and budget.
SBS vs. SUS / CUK (Solid Unbleached Sulfate)
SUS, also known as coated unbleached kraft or CUK in some packaging contexts, uses virgin unbleached chemical pulp.
Its longer fibers and natural appearance can make it suitable for applications requiring strong structural performance and a distinctive kraft look.
However, its natural brown interior and exterior characteristics make it visually different from the bright white appearance associated with SBS.
Real-World Industry Applications
SBS is frequently selected for packaging categories where print quality, presentation, clean appearance, and structural performance are important.

+------------------+ +------------------+ +------------------+
1. Beauty and Cosmetic Packaging
In prestige beauty, packaging appearance can play an important role in the customer's perception of a product.
SBS can provide a smooth, bright surface for cosmetic cartons that require detailed graphics and premium finishing. Depending on the project, brands may combine SBS with soft-touch coatings, spot UV, embossing, debossing, or foil stamping.
2. Pharmaceutical Packaging
Pharmaceutical packaging requires clear information, accurate dimensions, readable printing, and reliable converting performance.
SBS can be used for cartons requiring fine typography, product information, barcodes, regulatory details, and other printed elements. The specific board grade must be selected according to the packaging line, product requirements, and applicable regulations.
3. Food and Confectionery Packaging
Food packaging can require carefully controlled materials and barrier systems.
Virgin SBS grades designed for food-contact applications can be useful where print quality, clean appearance, and controlled odor or taste transfer are important.
For direct food contact, however, the complete packaging system must be verified for the intended food type and regulatory market.
Engineering Framework for Selecting the Right SBS Grade
Choosing the appropriate specification requires balancing product weight, package dimensions, board caliper, printing requirements, structural design, and finishing.
WEIGHT-TO-CALIPER SELECTION FRAMEWORK
Product Weight Starting Caliper Range
+---------------------------------------------------------------+
| Light (< 0.5 lbs) ---> 12pt - 14pt SBS |
| Medium (0.5 - 2.0 lbs)---> 16pt - 18pt SBS |
| Heavy (2.0 - 4.0+ lbs)---> 20pt - 24pt+ SBS |
+---------------------------------------------------------------+
These ranges are starting points rather than universal specifications. Final board selection should be confirmed through structural testing and supplier recommendations.
Step 1: Apply the Weight-to-Caliper Selection Matrix
Use total product weight as one factor when establishing a baseline board caliper.
- Under 0.5 lbs: A thinner SBS grade may provide sufficient structure for lightweight products such as cosmetic items, small skincare products, or individual retail units.
- 0.5 lbs to 2.0 lbs: Medium-caliper SBS can provide a useful balance between rigidity, folding performance, and material efficiency.
- 2.0 lbs to 4.0+ lbs: Thicker board or a reinforced packaging structure may be appropriate. For particularly heavy products, consider whether corrugated or laminated construction would provide better structural performance.
Product weight should never be the only factor. Box dimensions, span between panels, closure design, product shape, inserts, shipping conditions, and stacking requirements can all change the appropriate specification.
Step 2: Match Finishing and Printing Requirements
Printing and finishing processes should be compatible with the selected SBS grade.
Consider:
- Offset printing requirements
- Digital printing compatibility
- Flexographic printing where applicable
- UV coatings
- Aqueous coatings
- Foil stamping
- Embossing and debossing
- Lamination
- Adhesive requirements
For digital printing, confirm whether the selected SBS grade is approved or treated for the specific digital press technology being used.
For foil stamping and other finishing processes, the converter should verify that the selected coating, ink system, surface preparation, temperature, pressure, and finishing process are compatible.
Step 3: Use the Structural Optimization Checklist
Run the packaging dieline through a structural checklist before releasing the artwork to production.
STRUCTURAL DIE-LINE CHECKLIST
[ ] 1. Score Channel Width
Confirm the score rule and channel specification with the converter.
[ ] 2. Grain Direction Alignment
Consider MD and CD orientation when designing major panels and folds.
[ ] 3. Glue Flap Clearance
Maintain the supplier's required unprinted and unvarnished bonding area.
[ ] 4. Bleed & Safety Boundaries
Extend background artwork beyond cut lines and keep important text
safely away from scores and trim areas.
Score Channel Width
Score channel dimensions should be selected according to the board caliper, fiber characteristics, coating, die equipment, and converter's tooling specifications.
There is no single score-channel formula that works for every SBS grade. The packaging converter should confirm the appropriate rule and matrix combination during structural development.
Glue Flap Clearance
Glue areas should remain compatible with the adhesive system being used.
Printed inks, coatings, laminations, and other surface treatments can affect adhesive bonding. The packaging manufacturer should specify the required glue clearance for the selected adhesive and board construction.
Bleed and Safety Zones
Background artwork should extend beyond the final cut line to prevent unwanted white edges caused by normal cutting tolerances.
Important text, logos, barcodes, and other critical elements should remain inside the recommended safety zone and away from score lines and folds.
The exact bleed and safety requirements should be confirmed with the packaging supplier.
Summary & Next Steps
When print clarity, structural performance, clean folding, premium presentation, and controlled material properties are important, SBS paperboard is a widely used substrate for demanding packaging applications.
Compared with recycled alternatives, SBS can provide a smoother and more consistent printing surface, a clean white appearance, and useful folding-carton performance. However, its higher material cost means that it should be selected based on actual packaging requirements rather than automatically choosing the premium material for every project.
The right grade depends on product weight, dimensions, structural design, printing process, finishing requirements, regulatory considerations, production volume, and budget.
Before approving a full production run, businesses should evaluate physical samples and structural prototypes made from the specified board grade. Testing the actual material can reveal folding, scoring, fitting, printing, and finishing issues that may not be visible in a digital design file.
