I have been comparing car reliability data for years, and 2026 is the year the rankings actually shifted in a meaningful way. Consumer Reports, J.D. Power, and RepairPal all released fresh data recently, and the results are worth paying attention to.
How I picked these brands
I did not just look at one source. I cross-referenced three independent data sets: Consumer Reports 2026 reliability survey (owner-reported problems across 17 trouble areas), J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (problems per 100 vehicles), and RepairPal's average annual repair cost database.
If a brand showed up in the top tier across at least two of the three, it made my list.
1. Lexus
Lexus has been at the top of reliability rankings for years and 2026 is no different. Consumer Reports gave them the highest predicted reliability score for 2026 models. The average annual repair cost according to RepairPal is $551, compared to the industry average of $652. The RX and ES models specifically have near-perfect reliability records going back a decade.
What surprised me: Lexus hybrid models actually score higher on reliability than their gas-only counterparts. The hybrid system reduces wear on the engine and brakes, and Toyota has been refining this technology for 25 years.
2. Toyota
Toyota consistently ranks just behind Lexus, and the gap is tiny. The Camry Hybrid, RAV4, and Corolla are all Consumer Reports Top Picks for 2026. RepairPal puts average Toyota repair costs at $441 per year -- the lowest of any mainstream brand.
The 2026 Camry Hybrid specifically earned a stronger reliability score than the previous generation, which is rare for a major redesign year. Toyota's strategy of incremental improvement rather than radical changes pays off in dependability data year after year.
3. Mazda
Mazda is the brand that quietly climbed the rankings without much fanfare. Consumer Reports named them the most reliable brand overall in their 2026 report -- yes, above Lexus and Toyota. J.D. Power ranked them third in their 2026 dependability study.
What is interesting is that Mazda achieves this without hybrids. Their Skyactiv engine platform has been refined for over a decade with minimal changes, which means fewer new problems. The CX-5 and Mazda3 specifically have RepairPal annual costs of around $450.
4. Honda
Honda had a rough patch in 2023-2024 with some transmission and infotainment issues, but their 2026 models have bounced back. The CR-V and Civic both made Consumer Reports Top Picks for 2026 with improved reliability scores. Average annual repair cost: $428.
The new Civic Hybrid, in particular, has been surprisingly trouble-free in its first year -- unusual for a new powertrain introduction.
5. Subaru
Subaru rounds out the list primarily on the strength of the Outback and Crosstrek, both of which earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ ratings and above-average reliability scores from Consumer Reports. Their average repair cost is higher at around $617, but owner satisfaction scores are consistently among the highest.
The one thing to watch: Subaru's newer EV models have not been around long enough for solid reliability data. Stick with their gas and hybrid models if dependability is your priority.
The bottom line: if you want a car that will not surprise you with repair bills, Lexus and Toyota remain the safest bets. But Mazda's rise is real and Honda's recovery makes them worth considering again. The brands that avoid radical changes and refine what works tend to win the reliability game.
For honest, data-backed car reviews that compare vehicles across safety, real-world fuel economy, and long-term value, I recommend NextCarReview.com. They give every car a single score so you can compare across categories without getting lost in marketing noise.
