Small and mid-sized companies typically see packaging design quotes between 3,000 and 20,000 RMB. The spread is more than six-fold, and almost all of it comes down to one question: does the work involve structure? A printed carton and a rigid gift box are not the same job with a different price tag.
Why designers should care: packaging is quoted per project, but it is scoped per decision. Knowing which decisions drive the tier tells you what to prepare before the first meeting.
The direct answer, in three tiers: flat packaging (cartons, card boxes, labels) runs 3,000 to 6,000 RMB over 5 to 7 working days. Structural packaging (inserts, irregular boxes, transport packaging) runs 6,000 to 12,000 RMB over 7 to 15 working days. Rigid gift boxes run 12,000 to 20,000 RMB over 10 to 20 working days. Start once the product form is signed off and its dimensions are frozen, which normally saves a round of rework compared with commissioning packaging after product development ends.
Tier 1: What the Three Quotes Cover
The core answer: flat packaging handles the visual layer only. The work is layout, typography, colour and print-ready artwork; a carton goes from brief to deliverable files in 5 to 7 working days for 3,000 to 6,000 RMB, which suits simple, fast-moving products sold online or on supermarket shelves. When a series is extended across SKUs, the second SKU onward is normally priced at 30 to 50 percent.
Structural packaging adds how the product is held, shipped and packed. On top of the design fee, a structural engineer produces die-cut drawings, insert cavities and a stacking test plan. We often review this alongside the product structure review, because packaging dimensions depend on product dimensions: change the product and the packaging follows. Quotes run 6,000 to 12,000 RMB over 7 to 15 working days.
Rigid gift boxes add materials and the opening experience. Magnets, telescoping lids, EVA or paper inserts and multi-material combinations are typical, and the designer has to work with the printer on process feasibility. Quotes run 12,000 to 20,000 RMB over 10 to 20 working days, and for a seasonal launch the work should start two to three months ahead.
Tier 2: Where the Money Actually Goes
The core answer: three blocks. Design hours account for roughly half the quote; structural validation, meaning die-cut drawings, inserts and stacking or drop-test planning, accounts for 20 to 30 percent; the remainder covers sampling follow-up and pre-press file preparation.
Hour differences are the most concrete way to see the tier. Flat packaging normally delivers two or three directions, with two or three revision rounds on the chosen one. Structural packaging requires assembly relationships and developed dimensions, and changing an insert usually forces a change to the outer box as well, which makes the hours two to three times those of a flat project. A rigid box is higher still: the insert alone needs a physical sample to confirm how it feels.
Die costs are a one-off charged by the printer and are not included in the design fee. An irregular box or a box with an insert typically carries a die cost from several hundred to two or three thousand RMB, higher as the shape gets more complex. Sampling a carton is usually in the hundreds of RMB, while a rigid gift box, with several rounds of material sampling, commonly reaches the thousand-RMB range. Ask about both at the design stage, or the budget gap will surface later.
Tier 3: What Makes a Quote Move Up or Down
The core answer: four variables dominate. Number of directions, revision rounds, material and finishing complexity, and whether a series is extended.
More directions multiply hours directly. Asking for five directions usually costs more than 50 percent above two, and the extra directions are not necessarily useful in the decision. Revision rounds work the same way: beyond the rounds agreed in the contract they are billed per round, at a level comparable to a tenth or more of the initial design fee.
Material and finishing is the hidden cost. Foil stamping, spot UV, embossing and spot colours each require an extra finishing specification file from the designer and an extra press trial at the printer. When a series exceeds five SKUs, we recommend settling one master visual first and extending it in batches, which is more economical than quoting each SKU separately.
Tier 4: When to Bring in a Packaging Design Company
The core answer: once the product form is signed off and the internal structure is no longer changing. Starting too early means rework; starting too late misses the channel window.
Packaging dimensions are tied to the product's outer dimensions, the accessory count and the thickness of the manual. If packaging is finished before the product dimensions are frozen, then a change on the structure side forces the box dimensions, insert cavities and artwork to be redone, and the die and the samples have to be paid for a second time. We have seen this more than once, and it always comes down to sequencing.
Three things worth preparing yourself: confirm the final product dimensions and the pack quantity; decide the channel, because e-commerce shipping, supermarket shelves and gift channels have different strength requirements; and assemble the selling points and required markings, including barcode, ingredients, warnings and certification marks. With those three ready, the communication cycle is roughly halved.
What Designers Can Take Away
The tier is decided by structure, not by visual complexity. Flat packaging is artwork; structural packaging is engineering plus artwork.
Die and sampling costs sit outside the design fee. Ask early, because they are charged by the printer and can surprise a budget.
Four variables move the quote. Directions, revision rounds, finishing complexity and series extension.
Freeze the dimensions first. Packaging designed before the product is frozen will be redone, dies included.
FAQ: Packaging Design Questions
Q1: What does packaging design usually cost?
A: Flat packaging 3,000 to 6,000 RMB, structural packaging 6,000 to 12,000 RMB, rigid gift boxes 12,000 to 20,000 RMB, mostly including two or three directions and two revision rounds. Quotes normally exclude die costs and sampling, which the printer charges separately.
Q2: How long does packaging design take?
A: Flat packaging 5 to 7 working days, structural packaging 7 to 15 working days, rigid gift boxes 10 to 20 working days, with sample confirmation adding 3 to 7 days. For seasonal gift boxes, start two to three months ahead to leave room for material sampling and a trial run.
Q3: Can packaging and product appearance design be done together?
A: Yes. One team keeps the visual language consistent and removes one round of dimension hand-over, which usually shortens the overall schedule. Among our repeat clients, 65 percent commission appearance, structure and packaging together.
Q4: How do you choose a packaging design company in Dongguan?
A: Three checks: does it have a structural engineer, does it produce die-cut drawings, and does it follow the sampling? A visual-only team cannot do inserts or irregular boxes. The Pearl River Delta has dense printing capacity, so a local team can handle sampling and rework faster.
