Mac Dock on Multiple Displays: Every Option Compared (2026)

macOS cannot show the dock on every monitor at the same time — it moves to whichever screen your cursor is near, which means every time you reach for an app on your second or third monitor, you're either hunting for the dock or making a long mouse trip to the bottom of the wrong screen. There are four ways to deal with this: live with the default behaviour, use a terminal trick, use BetterTouchTool as a partial workaround, or replace the dock entirely with something that puts a real dock on every display.

Why macOS only shows the dock on one screen at a time

macOS has worked this way since the beginning. The dock is tied to a single display — the "main" display, defined in System Settings → Displays → Arrange, whichever screen has the menu bar. You can move it left, right, or bottom, and you can change which monitor is the main one, but you cannot have two docks running simultaneously from macOS itself. This is a deliberate platform constraint, not a bug.

The behaviour that trips people up most: if you have auto-hide on, the dock appears on whichever screen your cursor is nearest to the edge of — which sounds useful until you realise it means the dock pops up unpredictably on the wrong monitor depending on where your mouse happens to be sitting.

Option 1 — Drag your cursor to the bottom edge of any screen (the free workaround)

If you have auto-hide enabled, macOS will summon the dock to whichever screen you push your cursor toward the bottom edge (or left/right edge, depending on dock position). It's not a second dock — it's the same dock teleporting between displays.

To enable this:

1. System Settings → Desktop & Dock
2. Turn on Automatically hide and show the Dock

This is the zero-cost option. The trade-off: there's a ~0.5 second delay, the dock disappears again when you move away, and on large multi-monitor setups the trip to the correct screen edge still takes real time.

Option 2 — Change your main display to match where you work most

If you always work on a specific monitor, drag the white menu bar strip to that display in System Settings → Displays → Arrange. The dock follows the menu bar. This is the right call for single-primary-display setups — laptop users who dock with a large external monitor, for example.

It doesn't solve the problem if you genuinely split attention across displays. And it doesn't work at all for three-monitor setups where you might need a dock accessible from any screen.

Option 3 — BetterTouchTool floating dock (partial fix)

BetterTouchTool ($22 one-time or $12 two-year licence) can create a floating trigger zone that opens a custom action panel, sometimes used as a pseudo-dock. It's a workaround rather than a solution — you're building a launcher from scratch, there's no icon, no hover previews, no live window state, and it won't behave like a real dock. If you already own BTT for other reasons it's worth experimenting with, but buying it specifically for this is solving the wrong problem.

Option 4 — Replace the dock with one that supports multiple displays natively

This is the only option that actually gives you a proper dock on every monitor. Dockish is built specifically around this: it puts a fully functional dock on all connected displays simultaneously, with independent layouts per monitor if you want them.

What that means in practice:

• All monitors mode: the same dock appears on every connected display. Switch to any app from whichever screen you're looking at.
• Independent mode: each display gets its own dock with its own pinned apps. Your coding monitor shows dev tools; your communication monitor shows Slack, Mail, and Calendar.
• Hot-plug support: connect or disconnect a monitor and Dockish adjusts automatically. The dock appears on the new screen within seconds.
• Per-mode layout memory: if you switch between All Monitors and Independent modes, each mode remembers its own layout separately.

Dockish also replaces some of the things that make the native dock frustrating on multiple monitors specifically — clicking a minimised app actually brings it back (the native dock often just bounces the icon), hover previews let you see which window is which before you click, and iPhone-style folders help when you have a lot of apps pinned.

It's $6.99 one-time with a 7-day free trial, requires macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) or later, and there's no subscription.

How the options compare

If you have one external monitor and your primary working display is consistent, changing the main display in System Settings is genuinely the right answer — don't buy an app to solve something a setting fixes. If you work across two or three displays and the dock's location is genuinely interrupting your workflow, that's what Dockish exists for.

Does hiding the macOS dock conflict with Dockish?

Dockish includes a one-click "Hide macOS Dock" option in its settings — fully reversible at any time. When you switch to Dockish, hiding the native dock avoids the two docks overlapping on your primary display. On your secondary and tertiary monitors, macOS's dock was never showing anyway, so there's nothing to hide there.

You keep full access to every app you had pinned: when you install Dockish on a new machine, it automatically imports your existing macOS dock layout, so you don't start from scratch.

What about when I connect or disconnect my laptop?

This is the scenario that breaks the auto-hide workaround hardest. When you dock your MacBook, macOS has to figure out which display is now the main one, and the dock moves — often to the wrong screen, often after a delay. Undock, and it moves again.

Dockish handles monitor changes via display profile detection: it recognises your monitor configuration (which displays are connected, in which arrangement) and applies the right layout for that setup automatically. The dock shows up on the right screens without you touching anything.

For anyone who docks and undocks a laptop regularly, this alone is the main reason to switch.

Common questions

Can I show the Mac dock on two monitors at the same time without a third-party app?

No — macOS has no built-in option to display the dock on multiple monitors simultaneously. The closest native behaviour is enabling auto-hide and pushing your cursor to the screen edge on any display, which moves the single dock to that screen temporarily. A dedicated app like Dockish is the only way to have a real dock present on every display at once.

Does Dockish work with three or more monitors?

Yes. Dockish shows a dock on all connected displays regardless of how many you have. In independent mode, each display gets its own pinned layout; in mirrored mode, every display shows the same dock. Hot-plug support means adding a third monitor mid-session works without restarting the app.

Will a second dock slow down my Mac?

Dockish is a lightweight menu bar app — it doesn't run a separate process per dock instance in a way that measurably affects performance. It requires macOS 14.0 or later and uses native macOS APIs throughout. The 7-day free trial is the practical way to check it runs well on your specific setup before buying.
