GPS works without the internet. Your phone's GPS chip listens to satellites directly, so it always knows where you are. What needs data is the map itself. Download the map in advance and you can navigate in the mountains, abroad without roaming, or in areas with patchy coverage.
How offline navigation works
- GPS/GNSS positioning: satellites (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou) give your location for free, no data needed.
- Offline map data: roads, place names and routing information stored on your phone.
- Offline routing: some apps calculate routes without the internet; others need data for live traffic and rerouting.
Google Maps offline
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture → Offline maps.
- Tap Select your own map and drag the box over the area you need.
- Tap Download. Large areas can take several hundred MB.
- Turn on Auto-update offline maps and Download over Wi-Fi only.
Offline capabilities: driving directions and search within the downloaded area. Walking, cycling and transit directions are more limited offline, and live traffic isn't available.
Apple Maps offline (iPhone)
- Open Apple Maps → tap your profile → Offline Maps.
- Tap Download New Map, adjust the area, then Download.
Offline Apple Maps supports driving, walking, cycling and transit directions, plus place details such as opening hours, within the downloaded area.
Organic Maps and OsmAnd (fully offline, OpenStreetMap)
These apps are built for offline use from the ground up:
- Organic Maps: clean, fast, privacy-friendly, no ads or tracking. Great for hiking trails and cities.
- OsmAnd: extremely detailed, with contour lines, hiking routes and many plug-ins. Powerful but more complex.
Download countries or regions once, and you get full turn-by-turn navigation without any connection.
HERE WeGo
Offers offline maps for entire countries with voice navigation, and is popular for international road trips.

Offline navigation checklist before a trip
- Download maps on Wi-Fi before you leave.
- Check storage space; country maps can be 200MB–2GB.
- Turn on Location → Improve accuracy (Wi-Fi/Bluetooth scanning helps even without internet).
- Carry a power bank, because GPS navigation with the screen on drains battery.
- Save key places (hotel, airport, trailhead) as favourites.
Improve GPS accuracy offline
- Get a clear view of the sky; tall buildings and dense forest reduce accuracy.
- Phones with dual-frequency GPS (L1+L5) are much more accurate in cities.
- Calibrate the compass (figure-eight motion) if the direction arrow drifts.
- Keep the app open for a minute at the start so it gets a solid fix.
Save battery while navigating
- Use dark mode and lower screen brightness.
- Turn on Airplane mode and then re-enable Location only. GPS still works.
- Use voice guidance with the screen off.

Summary
GPS never needs data; maps do. Download them ahead of time in Google Maps or Apple Maps for everyday travel, or use Organic Maps and OsmAnd for fully offline adventures.
For the most accurate navigation, look for phones with dual-frequency GPS and big batteries. Compare models on infozme's best battery life phones.
