I was helping a friend shop for a car last week. Her budget: $20,000. She assumed she'd end up in something 4-5 years old, maybe a CPO Corolla or Civic.
What she actually found: at $20K, the cars she liked were all 7-10 years old with 100K+ miles. She was genuinely shocked.
But the data says she shouldn't have been.
Used car buyers are going older than ever.
According to CarGurus' 2026 Mid-Year Review, 40% of used cars sold this year are 7 years or older. That's up from 32% in 2020. The share of vehicles sold with 60,000 to 150,000 miles on the odometer is up 16%.
The reason is simple math. The gap between average new and used car prices has grown from $13,000 in 2015 to $21,000 today. When the price difference is that wide, people naturally reach further back in model years.
Here's what's actually selling.
The top three used vehicles in the high-mileage, older-model category are the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and RAM 1500. These trucks average around $20,000 with more than 120,000 miles. They're not pretty. They're not new. But they run, and they're what people can afford.
Reliability has improved, and that's part of the story.
The average vehicle on U.S. roads is now nearly 13 years old. Cars last longer than they used to. A well-maintained 2016-2019 model with 100K miles is a very different proposition than the same mileage would have been twenty years ago.
Modern engines routinely hit 200K without major issues. Transmissions are better. Rust protection is better. Even electronics hold up longer.
The hidden cost risk.
The catch is maintenance. A car with 120,000 miles will need timing belts, water pumps, suspension components, and possibly transmission service soon. If you're spending $20K on the purchase and don't budget another $2-3K for inevitable repairs in the first two years, you're setting yourself up for a bad time.
My takeaway for buyers:
Don't be scared of high-mileage cars. Be scared of high-mileage cars with no service records. A 2017 Toyota with 110K miles and a full maintenance history is a smarter buy than a 2020 with 80K and mystery history.
The market is what it is. The buyers who win are the ones who factor maintenance into the budget from day one.
