LED strips are the easiest light to install — and the hardest to fix. Change a failed downlight driver and you're done in ten minutes. But when a strip misbehaves after the ceiling is closed up, you're looking at demolition work. After years of helping customers troubleshoot strip installs, I can tell you: about 90% of strip failures trace back to six wiring and installation mistakes. Here they all are, with the fix for each.
Mistake 1: Cutting anywhere except the cut marks
Low-voltage LED strips have a parallel circuit built from repeating groups. You can only cut where the scissors symbol is printed — every 3 LEDs for 12V strips, every 6 for 24V. Cut between marks and you break the copper trace: everything after the cut goes dark.
COB strips are friendlier here (cut points as close as every 2.5–5 cm on many 24V models), but "denser" still doesn't mean "anywhere". Measure first, then cut at the mark closest to your target length.
Mistake 2: Twisted, taped connections
The classic shortcut: strip the wires, twist them onto the strip's pads, wrap electrical tape. It works on day one. Six months later the joint oxidizes, contact resistance climbs, and that section starts flickering and dimming.

Polarity reversed on a single-color strip? It won't light up, but it won't be damaged — just swap the wires. RGB strips wired in the wrong channel order will light up with scrambled colors, so check the pinout before you connect.
Mistake 3: One long run, single-end powered
Why is the strip bright at the start and candle-dim at the end? Voltage drop. Copper has resistance; the further the current travels, the lower the voltage. A 12V strip shows visible tail dimming past ~5 m on a single feed.
The fixes are well established:
- Go 24V — half the current for the same wattage, roughly 10 m per single feed;
- Feed both ends or inject mid-run — add a power feed every 5–10 m;
- Use ≥ 1.5 mm² pure copper wire for the feeds. Don't cheap out here.
Mistake 4: A power supply with no headroom
The rule: driver wattage ≥ strip wattage × 1.2. Ten meters of 10 W/m strip needs at least a 120 W supply. Most "it was dim from day one, and dims more every month" stories are a supply running permanently at 100% load, overheating and sagging.
One more smart-home note: dimming and color control belong to the controller (Zigbee/Bluetooth module) in front of a plain constant-voltage driver. Don't buy a dimmable driver and a controller and stack them.
Mistake 5: Skipping the aluminum profile
Sticking bare strip with its adhesive is quick, but you pay three times: poor cooling, messy light spots, and a crooked line. An aluminum channel with a frosted PC diffuser:
- sinks heat so the LEDs age slower,
- turns the output into one continuous soft line of light,
- lets you pull the strip out for replacement years later.
For shallow coves and anywhere the strip is visible, profile + COB strip is the combo that actually looks premium.
Mistake 6: No IP rating where it matters
Bathrooms, balconies, above kitchen sinks, outdoor eaves: bare IP20 strip is out. The rule of thumb — dry indoor areas IP20, splash zones IP65 (silicone-encapsulated), outdoor exposed IP67. And seal the joints too: the failure point is almost never the strip body, it's the connector you didn't waterproof.

That last row is the one that saves the most money. Five minutes of testing beats a day of demolition.
FAQ
Can I cut LED strip anywhere? No — only at the marked cut points (every 3 LEDs on 12V, every 6 on 24V). Cutting elsewhere breaks the circuit and everything after goes dark.
Why does my strip flicker after a few months? Almost always an oxidized twisted joint, or an overloaded power supply. Use soldered or crimped joints and size the supply at 1.2× the strip wattage.
12V or 24V strip? For runs longer than 5 m, 24V — half the current means half the voltage drop. 12V suits short cabinet and shelf runs and offers finer cut points.
