Every thread about freelancing from India gets the same answers: sign up for Upwork, try Braintrust, make a Contra profile. I followed that advice for a while and heard nothing back, and eventually started wondering whether the problem was my portfolio or the platforms.
So I stopped guessing. Last week I logged into each one from my own Indian account and counted what was actually there.
All figures were measured between 8 and 13 September 2026. Platforms change quietly, so trust the method more than any individual number, and re-check before you act on it.
The ones that are structurally closed

Braintrust is the one that costs people the most time. You can create a profile, browse all 139 jobs and apply to any of them. Every engineering role's location list is US, LATAM, Europe or a named US city. The only India-eligible work on the platform is Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi and Odia language annotation at 10 to 30 dollars an hour.
There is also a trap inside the trap. A field called locations_strongly_required: false looks like a green light. It is not. One role carrying that flag reads "United States only, W2" in the posting body. Read the body, never the flag.
RemoteOK is worth stating plainly because people assume they are filtering badly: the public API returns 99 jobs in total, across every category and seniority. Not 99 matching a filter. 99 on the whole site. There is nothing to filter.
The ones that are metered rather than closed
Freelancer.com on the free plan gives you 6 bids per month. Not per day. It is easy to look at a hundred matching projects and plan a week of proposals around them. The footer of any project page carries the real number: "N bids left out of 6."
Three further gates sit on top of that allowance, all visible on a single listing: Preferred Freelancer projects are locked entirely, "Verified" status is required to bid on anything at or above 2500 dollars, and some clients require country tax paperwork before engagement.
Upwork is capped by Connects, not by competition. One well-paid job costs 8 to 20 Connects to apply to. That inverts the correct strategy: when each application costs a metered resource, fewer and longer and more specific beats volume.
The filters lie
Wellfound: the jobTypes=contract filter is broken. Postings returned under it say "Job type: Full Time" on their own page.
LinkedIn: contract + part-time + remote + India, past week, returned 223 postings. Six actually described freelance, contract or hourly work in the body. The rest were full time, and several were on-site.
LinkedIn is genuinely good for a full-time search. Just do not budget freelance proposals from it, or you will spend the day reading full-time job descriptions.
What actually produced conversations
None of these are marketplaces. All three are free and uncapped.
Hacker News "Who is hiring", first working day of every month. One thread had 252 top-level comments; 28 were contract or freelance friendly, and roughly 36 across the thread carried a real, direct email address, often the founder's. You are emailing a named human who publicly said they need help, instead of a form that scores you.
Two mechanics matter. Find the current thread through the whoishiring account's submitted posts, because searching by relevance returns threads from 2013 to 2020. And work it inside the first 72 hours; the emails do not change but the attention does.
Its sibling thread, "Freelancer? Seeking freelancer?", is a seller board. Two September threads, 25 comments, zero client-side posts. Skip it.
Niche tool community job boards. The forum for a specific tool you are genuinely strong with: n8n, Retool, Webflow, Supabase, whichever. The people posting are not recruiters, they are builders with a budget and a stuck project who have already self-selected into your exact skill. Most forums rate-limit private messages; one per 15 seconds was the enforced floor I hit, so pace at 20.
Direct outbound email. No cap, no gatekeeper, no geo-restriction, no algorithm. Two source lists that worked: the partner or expert directory of a tool you know well, because those agencies have overflow and subcontract it, and local businesses with visibly outdated websites.
One warning: roughly one in five scraped addresses hard-bounced. Scrapers happily produce %20info@, mailtoxxx@ and your@email.com. Filter the obvious breakage first, and prefer a real named inbox over info@.
The rate traps
Every one of these is a real listing, and they share a shape: the job description is excellent and the number is hidden until you have already invested effort.
A "Freelance Python Full Stack AI Engineer" role, remote, part-time, strong stack, FastAPI and LangChain and RAG and Neo4j, and the platform flagged me as a top applicant. Step three of the application asked: "Are you comfortable with an hourly compensation of 8 USD?"
A TypeScript and Next.js role with no pay on the card. The external application page listed 7 LPA.
A posting titled "Full Stack Engineer, India (Remote)", rated a high match by the platform's own algorithm. The actual employer was in Changwon-si, South Korea, at 20 to 21 thousand dollars a year, on Korean working hours.
And on at least one high-paying platform, the hourly rate field on the application form prefills at 1 dollar an hour. Submit without editing it and you have formally offered to work for a dollar.
The rule that prevents all four: find the number before you write anything, and read back every prefilled field before you submit. A great job description is not evidence of a real rate. On India-facing freelance listings it is very often the opposite, because the description is doing the work the salary cannot.
If you take one thing from this
Log every send with a date and a channel from day one. Two weeks in, that log is the only thing that can tell you where your next client is actually coming from, and it is almost never where you assumed. This entire post exists because I kept a log instead of trusting an impression.
