Start From Restore, Not Capacity
Capacity planning answers whether the data fits. Restore planning answers whether it comes back in time. Size from the recovery-time objective of your largest realistic restore, then confirm capacity is sufficient.
The Inputs That Matter
Data volume, daily change rate, retention length, and restore concurrency drive the requirement. Change rate is the figure most often estimated from memory, and it is the one that most distorts the result.
Specifying Well
A correctly sized Veeam backup appliance is specified against measured change rate and a defined restore-time target, not against a headline capacity figure that ignores how fast data must move back.
Leave Room for Synthetics
Synthetic full operations consume substantial I/O on the appliance. A design with no headroom for them will either build them late or degrade concurrent restores, and both failures surface at the worst possible time.
Plan for the Refresh Cycle
Size for growth across the full refresh period rather than for today's estate. A platform that fits exactly on day one has no capacity for the environment it will actually be protecting in two years.
