Microsoft has put Apple Silicon macOS agents with Xcode 27 into public preview on Azure Pipelines, and for iOS build owners on Microsoft-hosted infrastructure it removes the last reason to keep a Rosetta-under-Intel workaround in the pipeline. The images ship through the pay-as-you-go GitHub-hosted Agents pool, per the Azure DevOps Blog post dated 2026-08-18.
What is in the preview
Two things landed together. The runner architecture: arm64 macOS agents, sold via the pay-as-you-go GitHub-hosted Agents pool that Azure Pipelines shares with the GitHub-hosted runner fleet. The image contents: Xcode 27 preinstalled. The blog frames Apple Silicon as the starting point for bringing agent sizes to the pay-as-you-go pool, which is a way of saying more shapes are meant to follow.
For teams whose iOS pipelines have been pinned to Intel-based Microsoft-hosted agents, this is the first Microsoft-hosted option that matches the architecture developers already build on locally. Native arm64 means the Xcode toolchain, simulator and the code under test run on the same instruction set end to end, which shortens the list of things that behave differently in CI than on a laptop.
The catch, and where it bites
The preview label is doing real work. Public preview in Azure DevOps carries no availability SLA and no compatibility promise, and every dependency in an iOS build (fastlane, cocoapods, Homebrew formulae, custom xcconfigs) has to be re-validated on arm64. Teams that already ship arm64 builds from GitHub Actions or from self-hosted M-series mac minis have paid this tax. Teams still on Intel-hosted Azure agents will pay it now.
The pricing surface is the other unknown at the pipeline level. Pay-as-you-go is billed separately from the parallel-jobs model Azure Pipelines has used historically for Microsoft-hosted agents, so the switch is a billing decision as much as an image choice. The release notes describe the delivery vehicle but do not price the minute. Budget owners will want a number before this leaves preview.
The Rosetta detour on Intel agents is not gone the moment the preview opens. It is optional now, which is a different fact.
