I've been launching products for 25 years — as a CTO, a CPO, and a CMO. I've shipped things with teams of hundreds and budgets in the millions. So when AI coding tools showed up and I could build a working app in a weekend, alone, I thought the hard part was finally solved.
It wasn't. The coding barely feels like the bottleneck anymore. Judgment does.
Here's what I keep seeing: people can now build almost anything, so they build before they've decided anything. The output is a technically fine app that nobody wants. Not because the code is bad — because the decisions underneath it never got made.
The things that quietly get skipped when building is this cheap:
Who exactly pays for this, and why they'd switch
What actually hurts enough that someone opens their wallet
What's genuinely in V1 vs. what just felt fun to build
How it's different from the five tools that already do this
Whether anyone will pay before you write the code
None of these are engineering problems. They're decisions. And AI is happy to help you build the wrong thing beautifully, because it never asks "should this exist?"
42% of startups still fail from no market need. That number hasn't moved in a decade, even as building got 10x easier. The constraint just relocated — from "can I build it?" to "should I, for whom, and why?" — and most of our tools still optimize the part that's no longer the hard part.
So I stopped opening the editor first. Now I force the decisions before the build — buyer, problem, scope, pricing, launch — and only then let AI do what it's genuinely great at.
