Inspiration
When thinking about comfort food, we didn't want to design another generic, calorie-counting recipe database. We wanted to capture the emotional warmth of foodβthe quiet feeling of sitting in a sun-drenched digital kitchen at golden hour.
Our CSS and SVG art was inspired by:
The Steaming Golden-Hour Soup Bowl: A centerpiece illustration on the landing page representing immediate warmth. It features hand-crafted SVG elements, custom CSS floating spice particles (drifting at varying speeds), and rising steam lines.
The Dynamic Hunger Bowl: An interactive piece of SVG art tied to our custom hunger slider. As you slide from "Just peckish" to "Feed me immediately", the bowl physically expands, fills up with colorful broth (shifting from soft peach to deep tomato red), and populates with ingredients like tofu blocks, sliced carrots, green scallions, and hot steam.
The visual theme uses an editorial cream-paper texture, soft espresso typography, and organic card borders to feel like a handwritten note from a close friend.

Journey
- Setting up Tailwind CSS v4 and Vite We initialized a clean React + TypeScript project and integrated the new Tailwind CSS v4 plugin. Tailwind v4's CSS-first theme configuration allowed us to set up our warm, cozy palette variables directly in src/index.css using standard theme directives:

We layered an inline base64 SVG fractal noise pattern on the body tag to establish a warm, tactile paper parchment background texture without incurring external asset load costs.
- Building the Interactive CSS/SVG Art The highlights of the implementation are the micro-interactions:
The Hunger Slider: We built a custom slider track. We intercepted the range input onChange event in React, updating a scale factor and content rendering arrays. The SVG tofu, carrot, and scallion vectors are conditionally rendered based on hunger levels 1 through 4.
The Reveal pay-off Loader: The transition from the quiz to the result spins a golden plate SVG using a slow linear animation keyframe, while rapidly cycling comfort food names inside. This creates a playful, rewarding anticipation loop before displaying your match.
Personalization & The Addictive Recommendation Loop
We coded a local, client-side recommendation engine that weighs candidate scores using your cuisine, emotional state, and hunger level. To build a delightful repeat loop, we implemented a "One More Bite" button. This passes an array of previously matched IDs to our engine, executing an exclusions filter so that clicking it rolls a new compatible recommendation (e.g. transitioning from Masala Dosa to Moong Dal Khichdi or Rajma Chawal on the same selections) with a fresh transition animation.Accessibility as a Core Feature
Rather than treating accessibility as an afterthought, we ensured:
The progress indicator lists screen-reader hidden text descriptions (Question 2 of 3).
Visible focus ring offsets outline all select buttons and sliders when tabbing.
A media query listener immediately overrides and halts all rotating plates, floating spice particles, and rising steam lines if a user prefers reduced motion:

This project reminded us that focusing on polish, smooth transitions, and visual storytelling is often far more rewarding than adding complex databases and unnecessary backends. Sometimes, a beautiful static frontend is exactly what you need.
