Professional-grade closed-cell foam mounting tape — the same VHB-type used in automotive and construction — can hold skirting boards to a wall without a single nail or pin, provided the surfaces are clean, primed and the board sits flat against the wall. It works best on painted plaster, dry lining and smooth masonry; it's less reliable on bare or powdery plaster, heavily textured surfaces, or anywhere there's moisture behind the board. Get those conditions right and it's a genuinely solid fix.
Is tape actually strong enough to hold a skirting board?
The honest answer is: for most standard MDF or softwood skirting boards in a domestic setting, yes — with the right tape. Professional foam mounting tape rated for construction use has a shear strength that can exceed the pull-out resistance of a single lost-head nail into soft plasterboard. The tape works across the full bonded area rather than at discrete fixing points, which spreads the load well.
The caveats are real, though. Tape is not appropriate where:
- The board is heavy hardwood (oak, tulipwood architrave over about 18mm thick and dense) — the peel force at the top edge is too high
- The wall surface is powdery, damp, freshly skimmed (wait at least four weeks for new plaster to cure), or painted with a chalky emulsion that has poor adhesion itself
- There's any flex or bow in the board — tape needs full, even contact to bond properly
- The skirting runs behind radiators where temperatures cycle significantly
For a standard 15mm MDF board on a painted and primed wall in a living room or hallway, tape is a legitimate alternative to pins.
Which type of double-sided tape should you use for skirting boards?
Not all double-sided tape is the same, and this is where most DIY tape jobs fail.
Avoid:
- Thin polyester carrier tape (the shiny stuff sold in stationery shops) — it has almost no gap-filling ability and will peel off painted surfaces under any sustained load
- Foam tape sold in DIY sheds without a specification — if it doesn't state closed-cell acrylic foam and a temperature range, assume it's low-grade
Use:
- Closed-cell acrylic foam mounting tape, 1mm–2mm thickness — this is the VHB category. The foam conforms slightly to minor surface irregularities, the acrylic adhesive bonds aggressively to painted surfaces, and it holds across a wide temperature range
- For longer runs (over 1.5m), back this up with construction adhesive at the ends, or at any point where the board bows away from the wall

How to fit skirting boards with double-sided tape — step by step
Done properly, this takes about the same time as nailing, and leaves a cleaner finish with no filled pin holes.
What you need:
- Closed-cell foam mounting tape, 19mm or 25mm wide
- IPA (isopropyl alcohol) cleaning wipe — our kits include one
- Adhesive promoter wipe if bonding to a low-energy or glossy surface — also included in our kits
- A J-roller or firm rubber roller (a wallpaper seam roller works)
- A straight edge and pencil
Step 1 — Check the fit first
Offer the board up to the wall dry. It needs to sit flat with no gaps larger than 1–2mm. If there's a significant bow or the wall is uneven over more than that, tape alone won't bridge it — use construction adhesive instead, or in combination.
Step 2 — Prepare the wall surface
Wipe the wall with an IPA cleaning wipe and allow to dry fully (30–60 seconds). If the wall paint is glossy or feels slick, a light scuff with 180-grit followed by a second IPA wipe improves adhesion. On bare or newly painted surfaces, apply an adhesive promoter wipe and allow 2–3 minutes before taping.
Step 3 — Prepare the back of the board
Same process: IPA wipe on the back face of the MDF or timber. MDF is slightly porous but usually bonds well; if it's unprimed, prime it first and allow it to cure before taping.
Step 4 — Apply the tape to the board
Apply tape in continuous runs along the full length of the board — top edge, bottom edge, and one run down the centre for boards over 100mm tall. Don't leave gaps. Press the tape firmly to the board with a roller before removing the release liner.
Step 5 — Bond to the wall
Peel the release liner, position the board carefully (you'll have limited repositioning time once contact is made), and press firmly along the entire length. Apply sustained pressure — lean into it for 10–15 seconds per section. Roll along the top and bottom edges if you can get a roller in.
Step 6 — Dwell time
The bond reaches roughly 50% strength immediately and full strength after 24–72 hours. Don't flex or load the board during that window — avoid slamming doors nearby, and don't caulk and paint the same day.
What about corners and external angles?
Mitred corners need to be glued with wood adhesive at the joint itself — the tape holds the board to the wall, not board to board. Apply a small bead of PVA or mitre adhesive to the joint face before offering up, and use a pin or two at the corner until the PVA cures. Remove the pin and fill afterwards if a clean finish matters.
What if the tape ever needs to come off?
This is one of the underappreciated advantages over nails. Professional acrylic foam tape can be removed cleanly from painted walls without damaging the decoration, using the right technique:
- Warm the tape with a heat gun or hair dryer on low heat (40–50°C) to soften the adhesive
- Peel slowly at a low angle — the slower and more parallel to the surface you pull, the less likely you are to pull paint
- Any residue left behind dissolves with IPA or a citrus-based adhesive remover — no scraping required on sound paintwork

When should you use mechanical fixings instead?
Tape is right for a lot of skirting jobs, but not all of them. Use nails or screws (into plugged masonry or studs) when:
- The wall is damp, tiled, or has a vapour barrier behind it
- The boards are heavy hardwood over 15mm thick and tall (above 150mm)
- The job is in a rental property where future removal needs to be guaranteed non-destructive (ironically, tape is often better here, but check with your landlord)
- Building regulations or a warranty require mechanical fixing — this applies to some new-build settings
Tape is also not appropriate as the sole fixing for anything structural or load-bearing. A skirting board held by tape will stay in place under normal domestic use; it won't tolerate someone levering against it or a heavy impact.
