How to Replace a Headlight Bulb Yourself (and Not Touch the One Thing You Shouldn't)

Half of car maintenance fear is imagining hidden complexity. A headlight bulb is a plug, a rubber cap and a spring clip, buried a little.

Twenty minutes and a fifteen dollar part beats the shop's hour. One rule above all: never touch the new bulb's glass.

What you'll need

Replacement bulb in your car's type (H4, H7, H11... the old bulb or manual says)
Clean gloves or a cloth, no tools on many cars

The how to part

1. Buy the right bulb first

Pop the hood, twist the old bulb out (steps below read backwards) and read its base code, or punch your car into any parts site. Matching the exact type is the entire job's difficulty.

2. Cool engine, lights off, parking position

Bulbs get brutally hot. Ten minutes after parking keeps fingertips philosophical about the whole affair.

3. Reach the back of the headlight

Behind the headlight housing sits a rubber dust cap or a twist lock cover. Off it comes with a quarter turn or a pull. Tight spaces sometimes want the battery cover or washer neck moved a touch, they unclip politely.

4. Unplug, unclip, extract

Pull the power connector straight off, then release the spring clip (press down and swing aside) or twist the bulb base counterclockwise. Out comes the old one.

5. THE rule: handle by the base only

Skin oil on quartz glass burns a hot spot into it and the new bulb dies in months. Hold base and wires only. Smudged it anyway? A wipe with rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth saves the day.

6. Seat, clip, connect, test

Align the tabs with their slots, seat fully, spring clip back, connector on, dust cap on. Lights on before closing the hood: both cheap and bright? Job's done, and aim straight, compare against a wall.
