Motorcycle Tire Pressure: How to Check It Properly (and Why It Changes Everything)

Two little numbers, front and rear PSI, decide more about how your bike handles than anything you can bolt onto it.

Underinflated tires feel vague, overheat on highways and wear like pencils. Checking takes two minutes, and it should be a weekly ritual.

Here's how it works

Always check cold. Pressure rises about 10% when tires are hot from riding. Check before you leave, or wait three hours after parking. Adjusting hot tires to 'spec' leaves them underinflated at rest.
Find YOUR numbers. The swingarm sticker or owner's manual lists front and rear, often solo and with passenger/loaded versions. Trust these over the number molded on the tire sidewall: that one is a maximum, not a recommendation.

Measure, not guess. Press the gauge straight onto the valve, read, write both numbers down for a few weeks. You'll discover your bike's natural leak down rate, usually a PSI every week or two.
Top up correctly. Any gas station compressor works. Add two PSI over, then bleed down to target: more precise than chasing up. If it's drastically low often, you likely have a slow puncture, see a shop.
While you're there, look at the tire. Check tread depth, hunt for nails with a slow walk around, and confirm the age from the DOT code: four digits like 2423 mean week 24 of 2023. Tires older than about 5 to 6 years get replaced even with tread left.
